Ingredients
  • 3–4 ripe tomatoes, crushed
  • 2 tbsp cooked toor dal (optional)
  • 1 tsp rasam powder, ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp black pepper, ¼ tsp asafoetida
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds, 8–10 curry leaves, 2 garlic cloves, 1 dried red chili
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil, tamarind paste (1 tsp), salt, fresh cilantro
Instructions
  1. 1Boil crushed tomatoes with turmeric, rasam powder, pepper, tamarind, and 3 cups water for 10 min.
  2. 2Heat ghee, temper mustard, garlic, red chili, curry leaves, and asafoetida.
  3. 3Pour tempering into rasam. Add cooked dal if using. Simmer 5 min.
  4. 4Garnish with cilantro. Serve as soup or with rice.
