Ingredients
  • 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal), rinsed
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1-2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • For Tadka: 2 tbsp ghee or oil, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 2-3 dried red chilies, 4 garlic cloves sliced, pinch asafoetida (hing), 1/2 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder, fresh cilantro
Instructions
  1. 1Cook lentils in water with turmeric and salt until soft and broken down (pressure cooker 10-12 min or stovetop simmer 20 min).
  2. 2In a pan, heat oil/ghee. Add cumin, hing, garlic, dried chilies; let sizzle. Add onion and sauté until golden.
  3. 3Add ginger-garlic, green chilies, tomatoes and chili powder; cook until masala thickens.
  4. 4Pour tadka over lentils, mix well and simmer 5 min. Garnish with cilantro. Serve with rice or roti.
