Indian Style Red Lentil Dal Tadka - Easy — a healthy halal vegetarian recipe with 220 calories and 13g protein per serving.
Ingredients
- 1 cup red lentils (masoor dal), rinsed
- 4 cups water
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- Salt to taste
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1-2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 2 green chilies, slit
- For Tadka: 2 tbsp ghee or oil, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 2-3 dried red chilies, 4 garlic cloves sliced, pinch asafoetida (hing), 1/2 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder, fresh cilantro
Instructions
- 1Cook lentils in water with turmeric and salt until soft and broken down (pressure cooker 10-12 min or stovetop simmer 20 min).
- 2In a pan, heat oil/ghee. Add cumin, hing, garlic, dried chilies; let sizzle. Add onion and sauté until golden.
- 3Add ginger-garlic, green chilies, tomatoes and chili powder; cook until masala thickens.
- 4Pour tadka over lentils, mix well and simmer 5 min. Garnish with cilantro. Serve with rice or roti.
