Ingredients
  • 1 cup yellow lentils (toor/arhar or mix moong + toor)
  • 4 cups water + more as needed
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1-2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2-3 green chilies
  • For Tadka: 2-3 tbsp ghee/oil, 1 tsp cumin, 2-3 dried red chilies, 4-5 garlic cloves sliced, pinch asafoetida (hing), 1/2 tsp Kashmiri chili powder, kasoori methi
Instructions
  1. 1Pressure cook or simmer lentils with turmeric, salt, and water until soft and mushy (~20-25 min).
  2. 2In a separate pan, sauté onion until golden. Add ginger-garlic, chilies, tomatoes; cook to masala.
  3. 3Mix into lentils; adjust consistency with water. Simmer 5 min.
  4. 4For tadka: Heat ghee/oil, add cumin, hing, garlic, red chilies, chili powder. Pour over dal. Add kasoori methi. Garnish with cilantro.
